Sherlock Holmes: the Irish connections

A documentary on Irish radio station Newstalk investigates the numerous Irish connections of Sherlock Holmes - and asks why the detective is as popular as ever.

In "Was Sherlock Holmes Irish?", Luke McManus traces the character's Irish roots and the family background of author Arthur Conan Doyle. He visits Edinburgh to meet Doyle's biographer, Professor Owen Dudley Edwards, who has theories on the Irish origins of the names of Professor Moriarty and Holmes himself.

There are also contributions from Professors Des McHale, Clare Clarke and Barry McCrea, as well as silent film expert Rob Byrne and Colm McCarthy, a television director of BBC's Sherlock series

The documentary is available as a downloadable podcast from iTunes and Newstalk's website, as well as Soundcloud.com.
