A beginners' guide to Nordic noir


Barry Forshaw is the author of the authoritative guide Nordic Noir (2013) and also runs the Crimetime website. In this video he gives a quick tour of the Scandinavian crime fiction scene, from Sweden to Iceland.




The big names include:
  • Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö - the Martin Beck stories
  • Henning Mankell - Wallander ("Sweden's trojan horse")
  • Håkan Nesser - including the Inspector Van Veeteren stories and Inspector Barbarotti series
  • Karin Fossum ("the Scandinavian Ruth Rendell")
  • Stieg Larsson - the Lisbeth Salander trilogy
  • Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström
  • Jussi Adler-Olsen -  the Department Q series
  • Jens Lapidus - the Stockholm series
  • The Danish dramas The Killing and Borgen, and The Bridge
  • Arnaldur Indriðason - the  Icelandic series featuring Detective Erlendur
  • Yrsa Sigurðardóttir - the Thóra Gudmundsdóttir series, and this year's winner of the Petrona Award for Best Scandinavian Crime Novel
  • Anne Holt - the Hanne Wilhelmsen and Vik/Stubø series
  • Jo Nesbø - Inspector Harry Hole
